Career, Life Experiences:
After leaving high school, I attended Baker University, in Baldwin City, KS. I joined the Alpha Chi Omega social sorority and enjoyed being a part of the university choir. The summer of my junior year, I was fortunate to be able to spend two months studying at the University of Montreal, in Canada. I graduated from Baker in 1965 with a BA degree in English and foreign languages. I was a teacher at Cawker City High School, Cawker City, KS for four years, teaching English, French and speech classes, as well as being a class sponsor.
At the end of the 1969 school year, I "retired" from teaching and our son, Brent, was born in December of that year. Blaine was born in 1972, and I was a stay-at-home mom until both boys were in school full time. Also did some volunteer work at the local library, some tutoring, and worked with the local 4-H club during that time.
In 1979 I started working at The First State Bank & Trust in Osborne, KS (later to become a branch of Sunflower Bank), and stayed with them for the next 26 years. I worked in various positions with the bank, including teller, loan processing, consumer lending and insurance. I retired from the bank in 2005.
Marion and I met when we both started teaching in the same school district, and we were married in 1967. We share a love of traveling and we celebrated our first anniversary in Europe. We spent 3 weeks with 5 students and another teacher driving through Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and part of France. An unforgettable experience! We took numerous vacations with our boys as they were growing up to Minnesota, California, and many of the western states. When we were both fully retired, we took our dream trip to Alaska in our pickup camper, traveling for 79 days. We enjoyed it so much we took a second trip to Alaska in 2010 spending 93 days this time. Our boys were able to join us for a short time for some fishing and site seeing.
We have 5 wonderful grandkids, ages 5,7,8,9 and 13. We enjoy time spent with them and following their activities. Our son, Brent, is chief engineer at Osborne Industries, Osborne, KS and Blaine is the gas control coordinator for Enbridge Energy Co., in Houston, TX. In my retirement, I have taken on the job of treasurer of the local library board; I enjoy spending time in my flower garden when the weather allows, and working with genealogy tracing the family tree. We hope to do some more traveling in the future --- just haven't planned the next trip yet!
